CSA Program Details - 2012
ENROLLMENT IS NOW OPEN
What is Community Supported Agriculture?
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a growers alliance between farmers and consumers. Families and individuals who join the CSA receive a share of produce every week during the growing season (May through mid-October). In exchange, members sign a contract for the season, agree to pay in advance, or through a payment plan. Members pick up their food shares weekly at area drop sites or at the farmers market. The partners share in the risks and rewards of small-scale farming: weather, insect damage, flooding, drought, etc. or good rains, perfect summers, bumper crops, etc.
Who is Home Grown Kansas?
We, Elzie and Pat Randleas, are avid, professional natural gardeners. We have been growing on our city farm since tucked into the northwest part of Wichita since 1991. After our first few years of growing, the demand for our produce exceeded the supply we could grow in our limited space. At that time, we forged relationships with other local, reputable growers who could help us meet the market's demands for those crops such as melons that require more growing space than we have available. We market our produce through our CSA program, to discerning chefs and at two farmers markets. Although the vast majority of your share's produce will be produced at our city farm, we do have local farmers with whom we have long established relationships and who supply us with produce that is not grown on site - such as hydroponic tomatoes, corn and melon crops.
How does the CSA work?
The weekly food share includes an average over the 24 week season of 10 lbs. of herbs, fruits and vegetables. The bags generally have at least five to six different items. Your early bags will generally weigh the least but will average out as we enter the abundance of our mid summer and fall harvests. This is an optimal scenario as we have little control over Mother Nature (hail, drought, tornadoes, heavy winds, insect infestations, virus or bacterial infections, etc.)
Every week the share of produce will vary depending on the time of the season. Here are some basic examples of what might be in your share:
SPRING/EARLY SUMMER - snow peas, green onions, lettuces, kohlrabi, radishes, perennial herbs, spinach, greens, potatoes, berries
SUMMER/FALL –tomatoes, sweet and/or hot peppers, eggplant, okra, melons, cucumbers, onions, green beans, summer and winter squash, zucchini, basil, squash, Swiss chard, potatoes, garlic, spinach, broccoli, pumpkin, lettuces, Chinese radish, sage, peaches, etc.
Each week you will be updated by an email newsletter on the happenings at the farm, the items in your bag and suggestions on preparation and use of the produce.
